We can use the elimination method to solve the linear equations for given variables. In this process if we have two variables in two equations, first we can equal the one of its variable the cancel then solve for another variable. Then we can plug the value of this variable and we can get the value of another variable.

Example1: solve the equations 2x + 3y = 13 and x + y = 5 by using elimination method.

Solution:  First we can label the given equations as

Now we can plug y = 3 in the equation (2), then we get

x + 3 = 5

x = 5 – 3 = 2

So the solution is x = 2, y = 3

Example2: solve the equations x - 2y = 17 and x + y = 20 by using elimination method.
Solution:

Now we can plug y = 1 in the equation (2), then we get

x + 1 = 20

x = 20 – 1 = 19

So the solution is x = 19, y = 1
