Graphing Linear Equation is an effective tool for solving linear equations. Linear equation is an equation for a straight line where each term can be a constant or product of constant and a variable. The highest power of the variable appearing in linear equation is 1.  The equations involving only linear polynomials  we call as linear equations.  Linear equation makes a straight line when it is graphed. This can be written in the form (slope intercept form) y= m x + b. Graphing Linear equation made it easy to find slope and intercepts of a line.

Example 1:-

Graph y = x + 2

Solution 1:-

Substitute some values for x and find out y

If x = 0 then y = 2   (x, y) = (0, 2)

If x = 1 then y = 3    (x, y) = (1, 3)

If x = -1 then y = 1   (x, y) = (-1, 1)

Plot the points (x, y) in the graph and draw line connecting all the points

the above is the graph of linear equation y = x + 2

Example 2:-

Graph equation y = -2x -1

Solution 2:-

y = - 2x – 1

If x = 0 then the value of y = -1 so (x, y) = (0, -1)

If x = 1 then the value of y = -3 so (x, y) = (1, -3)

By taking some more values of x find values of y

By plotting x, y values in the graph and draw line connecting all the points
