Fact families are group of numbers which can form different numerical equations among their group by combining with numbers in the group in different ways. In order to form equations among the given family of numbers, different operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication or division can be used. Since the equations formed among the numbers are facts, and the facts are produced by the numbers of the certain group or family, hence they are known as fact families. Fact families help us understand performing the basic operations on numbers.

Example 1: Explain why the numbers 1, 4 and 5 form a fact family together?

Now in order to explain why 1, 4 and 5 form a fact family we have to first use basic operations among them to

check if they satisfy it.

For instance, 1+ 4= 5 (‘5’ is the member of the given family)

Similarly, 4+ 1= 5

Also, 5– 4= 1 (‘1’ is a member of the given family)

Similarly, 5– 1= 4 (‘4’ is also the member of the given family).

Hence 1, 4, and 5 form a fact family!

Example 2: Do 6, 9 and 15 form a fact family? Explain your answer.

Now in order to check if 6, 9 and 15 form a fact family or not, we have to first use the basic operations among

them.

6+ 9= 15 (‘15’ is the member of the given family)

And, 15–9= 6 (‘6’ is a member of the given family)

Similarly, 15- 6= 9 (‘9’ is also the member of the given family).

Hence 6, 9 and 15 form a fact family since they form equations among themselves!
